GENERAL
- - Q : When I start my xxx freeware, I have the following error :
    
    Could not load program
    Symbol xxxxx in xxxxx is undefined
    Error was: Exec format error
  - A : Your system is too old : check fileset bos.mp (or bos.up) : lslpp -h bos.mp
    If the most recent V.R.M.F is less than 4.3.3.50 then you must upgrade your system.
    The reason why it fails is that since AIX 4.3.3.25, IBM has changed the libc.a library to be in compliance with Linux (this is called Linux affinity). Therefore, some functions in libc have been removed, some other introduced. Since we build all the freewares on an AIX 4.3.3.81, the call to some functions on your system may fail.

SAMBA
- - Q : Unfortunately, samba (2.2.8) looks for smb.conf in
    /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf (do a strings swat | head to confirm)
    whereas the file is actually located in /usr/local/lib/smb.conf. A
    ln -s /usr/local /usr/local/samba seems to fix this, and the software now works
  - A : Yes, this is actually as samba is configured so, whatever your smb.conf is, making a link between it and /usr/local/samba/lib is the best to do.
- - Q : I downloaded your samba 2.1.1 distribution for AIX 4.3.3 and it did
    not work properly afterwards. I believe the problem is that installation creates
    a different directory structure from what is compiled in the distribution.
  - A : because we have followed instructions for building samba in the better way,
    the binary are not stored into a /usr/local/samba but effectively directly
    into the /usr/local. I may not be a problem for your AIX system, it's a
    quite different way.
    The configuration file is /usr/local/lib/smb.conf. You can check if it's
    correct by using the 'testparm' command. If this command give you error
    check about it.
    After, you effectively only need to run the 'smbd -D' and/or 'nmbd -D -s
    /usr/local/lib/smb.conf' to start Samba. You can also attempt to run
    'smbd' with the -s flag like this: 'smbd -D -s /usr/local/lib/smb.conf'
    that should work.

BIND
- - Q : I downloaded bind 9.2.0.0 but when running, it fails with :
    Could not load program ssh-keygen:
    Symbol resolution failed for ssh-keygen because:
    Symbol strsep (number 119) is not exported from dependent
    module /usr/lib/libc.a(shr.o).
  - A : This appears mostly with aix4.3.2 but also with some version of AIX 4.3.3 because bos.adt.include is not at a latest level : in particular, the string.h file does not contain a call to strsep (linked on strtok). You must upgrade your system to the latest level of AIX 4.3.3 (4.3.3.75).
  - Q : I have download bind-9.1.3 and I can see that this package is much
    bigger than the previous version 9.1.0 (~4 to 26 Mb).
    Is it a mistake or the new version really takes as much space?
  - A : so it's true that bind 9.1.3 as a biggest size than the 9.1.0, but it's
    seems logical because many bugs and features were added since 9.1.0. Many
    tests and protocol implementation like DNS Update, DNSSEC and IPv6 have
    changed to be compliant with IETF standard. I'm not a specialist of bind
    but I have use 9.1.0 version and I have change a server to use 9.1.3 and
    this newer version seems to be more stable and efficient. I don't really
    know why the size grew up like that but I think it's because a lot of work
    was done... so I hope ;)

APACHE
- - Q : Running Apache and PHP 4, I have the following error : Cannot load /usr/local/lib/apache/libphp4.so into server: No such file or directory
  - A : (from MD, France) : the machine doesn't have all librairies
    - mm-1_1_3_0.exe
    - gnu_gdbm-1_8_0_0.exe
    - glib-1_2_8_0.exe
    - db3-3_2_9_0.exe
    the user must do le following commands on libphp4.so
    dump -H libphp4.so

PHP
- - Q : Does your new version of PHP include the compiled cgi program besides
    the Apache module ?
  - A :

GCC
- - Q : I am working on AIX 4.3. I downloaded "gnu.gcc.g++-2.95.3.0.exe" from your site..While installing it's looking for requisite "freeware.gnu.gcc.g++2.95.3.0.rte". Since it could not found the same installation failed.
  - A : the GNU C compiler is divided into two part if you want to use the C++. You need to download the gnu.gcc-2.95.3.0.exe and install it before download and install the gnu.g++-2.95.3.0.exe. This last file is only and add-on to the first file.

openssh
- - Q : I downloaded openssh 2.9.2.0 and openssl 0.9.6.2 from your web site but it seems that both versions do not work together ... help !
  - A : the problem between OpenSSH and OpenSSL is a compilation problem that require to have the version of OpenSSL as the one used for build. So we have build OpenSSH using the 9.6.0 version of OpenSSL and to make it work you need to install this version and only this one !
- - Q : After installation of openssl_0.9.6.2 and openssh_2.9.2.0 I still get the same error message at startup of sshd:
    Could not load program /usr/local/bin/sshd:
    Dependent module /usr/local/lib/libcrypto.a(libcrypto.so) could not be
    loaded :
    Member libcrypto.so is not found in archive
  - A : the problem between OpenSSH and OpenSSL is a compilation problem that require to have the version of OpenSSL as the one used for build. So we have build OpenSSH using the 9.6.0 version of OpenSSL and to make it work you need to install this version and only this one !
- - Q : I downloaded openssh 3.0.2.1 but when running, it fails with :
    Could not load program ssh-keygen:

So we built another package named openssh_oldlibc_aix432-3.0.2.1.exe downloadable from OPENSSH directory in "new additions" that is to run from AIX 4.3.2 to AIX 4.3.3 level 4.3.3.1x included (lower than 4.3.3.25)

openssl
- - Q : When will openssh be compiled with openssl 0.9.6.2 ?
  - A : Actually, we are reinstalling our freeware dev machine , so, as soon as this is done and the software is at the right level, we will recompile all this stuff. Just have a break while waiting ... :)

postfix
- - Q : When installing postfix, I have the following error :
    sysck: 3001-037 The name postfix is not a known user for file /usr/local/var/spool/postfix/maildrop.
    sysck: 3001-003 A value must be specified for owner for entry /usr/local/var/spool/postfix/maildrop.
    sysck: 3001-017 Errors were detected validating the files
    for package freeware.postfix.rte.
  - A : A user "postfix" must be created on your system : simply type mkuser postfix and it fixes the problem.
mozilla 1.1 has been picked up and packaged but it seems that it does not work with our gtk+/glib or gnugettext freeware packages : IBM's one from the AIX toolbox for Linux ( ! rpm format !) are OK : we have packaged and we deliver mozilla 1.1 with this restriction.
